The British gained control of the Cape of Good Hope at the end of the 18th century, and subsequent British settlement and rule marked the beginning of a long conflict between the Afrikaners and the British.<\/p><p>The discovery of diamonds and gold in the late 1800s brought an influx of Europeans and further strained relations between the Afrikaners and the British. Internal protests and insurgency, as well as boycotts by some Western nations and institutions, led to the regime\\&#8217;s eventual willingness to negotiate a peaceful transition to majority rule. The first multi-racial elections in 1994 brought an end to apartheid and ushered in majority rule under an ANC-led government.<\/p><p>South Africa is endowed with abundant natural resources, and its economy is the largest in Africa with strong financial and manufacturing sectors.
